We finished the Mexican Economy lecture and then I introduced the Options assignment. Please email me if you were absent and need more information about this. Groups are presenting next class!
The class was introduced to "change and continuity" and we brainstormed ways Mexico has changed and ways Mexico has remained the same. After, we learned about the Mexican economy for our last lecture about Mexico.
Today we explored Mexican history by learning about Mexican songs and art that reveal the feelings of the times. Next class you and your group will be presenting your corridos!
We practiced Identifications and then learned about Mexican Independence!
At the beginning of class, we dissected Rivera's mural "Conquest of Mexico" and completed an OPVL. After, we learned about Mexican Independence.
As a class, we looked at maps of Mexico (assignment can be found under the Mexico tab) to see if geography could explain why Southern Mexico is plagued with poverty. After, we had the first lecture on the Origins and History of Mexico.
After looking at our culture last class, we analyzed Mexican culture. We ended class by watching Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown: Mexico.
In class today students were responsible for creating their own Cultural Map representing the cultural objects in their own culture. After, we went on a gallery walk and observed the Cultural Maps of everyone in class and then talked about Mexican culture. We finished class by reading a photo essay by the Atlantic, titled, "On the Border", and answered the accompanying questions posted on my website.
HOMEWORK:
In class we finished our conversation about the Rio Olympics and SPICE, and began talking about culture. We will be looking at culture in other areas of the world so it is important we understand culture in general and our own culture before we analyze others.
